Mercurius
04:45
|
|||
Mercury or spirit, the principle of fusibility and volatility
When the alchemist speaks of Mercurius, on the face of it he means quicksilver (mercury), but inwardly he means the world-creating spirit concealed or imprisoned in matter.
He is metallic yet liquid, matter yet spirit, cold yet fiery, poison and yet healing draught, a symbol uniting all the opposites.

Abraxas
04:30
|
|||
The Gnostic Abraxas created the material world and also had Demonic qualities.
He is the supreme power of being, in whom light and darkness are both united and transcended.
Gnostic talismans show Abraxas as a figure with a human body, the head of a rooster and Serpent legs.
His hands hold a shield and a whip, the shield usually inscribed with the name Iao, reminiscent of the Jewish four-letter name of God.
He is often mounted on a chariot drawn by four white horses, with both Sun and Moon overhead.

Athanor
04:48
|
|||
A key symbol of alchemy, the Athanor is the furnace of the Alchemists.
However, the Athanor is not a simple piece of laboratory equipment.
Regarded as the vessel in which transmutation takes place, the Athanor exists on a metaphysical level too, as a place of ultimate creation, where 'combustion' actually takes place and the Secret Fire burns.

The Black Crow is the beginning of the great work of soul alchemy.
This indicates the initial stages of the alchemist's encounter with his inner space, through withdrawing from the outer world of the senses in meditation, and entering what is initially the dark inner world of the soul.
Thus this stage is also described in alchemical texts as the blackening, the nigredo experience, and it is often pictured as a death process.
Thus in the symbol of the Black Crow we have the stepping out in consciousness from the world of the physical senses the restrictions that bind us to the physical body.
The next stage, is often shown as The White Swan. Now the alchemist begins to experience the inner world as being light filled: the initial inner brightness which is often erroneously mistaken for true illumination.
This is merely a first conscious encounter with the etheric world, and in comparison with physical sense experience is for many souls so overpowering as to be pictured as bright white light.
The alchemical tradition recognised this and symbolised this stage as the White Swan.
The swan is a bird which is rarely seen in flight, but rather swimming upon lake or river, gracefully moving on the surface of water, in soul terms, on the soul's surface, its etheric interface with the physical.
The Phoenix completes this process of soul development. The Phoenix bird builds its nest which at the same time is its funeral pyre, and then setting it alight cremates itself.
But it arises anew from the ashes transformed.
Here we have captured the alchemists experience of spiritualisation, He has integrated his being so much, that he is no longer dependent upon his physical body as a foundation for his being.

Seven metals are associated with the seven classical planets, and seven deities, all figuring heavily in alchemical symbolism.

Sulphur
04:32
|
|||
Sulphur or soul, the principle of combustibility, is the fire element.
In Alchemy, Salt, Sulphur and Mercury are known to be the Three Principles.
It's believed that all matter can be divided, via alchemical processes, into these three things.
Sulphur is the active male principle, possessing the ability to create change.
It bears the qualities of hot and dry, the same as the element of fire; it's associated with the sun.

Syzygia
05:12
|
|||
In Alchemy it means the recomposition of opposites, symbolized by the sacred marriage, or hierogamy, of the Sun-Moon couple.
In Gnosticism, syzygya is a divine active-passive, male-female pair of aeons, complementary to one another rather than oppositional; they comprise the divine realm of the Pleroma (the totality ofGod's powers), and in themselves chracterize aspects of the unknowable Gnostic God.
